If you’ve been on my socials in the last month, you already know our oldest’s school marching band has been invited to Disney to perform, and I came up with some unique nerdy/bookish ways to raise some funds (including bookish stickers, themed meme collections dedicated to yourself or a loved one, the chance to take over my social media pages for a day to promote your stuff, a bookish cash calendar, and more).
It’s gone really well, and many thanks to everyone who has already participated and helped me raise enough so that we could cover my kid’s expenses as well as have enough left over to donate some to all of the senior students going.
But.
Yesterday was the final payment due date, and as of the morning, there were still $15,000 worth of outstanding payments to be made. Because of this, they are still accepting payments through the next few days, so I’m here to give a last-minute “HEY IF YOU WANTED TO MAYBE DO THAT THING BUT FORGOT OR GOT DISTRACTED” message because forgetting and getting distracted is the reason I miss out on not doing things I actually want to do all the time.
And, of course, if you'd like to throw a couple of bucks our way to help just because, you're welcome to do that, too.
I know you likely don’t know these kids, but please believe me when I say they deserve this trip. We live in a small town, in a county that has no bookstore, movie theater, rec center, skating rink, bowling alley, mall, etc. where kids might be able to connect and have many quintessential childhood and adolescent experiences with friends and neighbors.
A number of them have never left the state, much less gotten to see the ocean or experience a theme park like Disney World. (This would be true even if the pandemic hadn’t stolen much of their childhoods; we are an area marked by poverty, and as much as West Virginia’s hills protect her people, they also have a way of keeping them in.)
And music is the lifeblood of our school system. It is the one area of education where our programs and students consistently excel, earning accolades year after year, with many students only feeling they can truly be themselves among their fellow musicians.
